In 1572, Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe began to study a “new star” with the help of his sister, Sophia, who was an astronomer, chemist, and historian in her own right. That star turned out to be a Type 1A supernova which currently exists only as a remnant, a giant cloud of expanding debris made up of mostly iron particles. In 2008, a light echo of the original supernova was discovered, providing additional data about the 1572 event. In this project, refracted geometrical components of Danish utility covers, as well as images of Sophia Brahe, are interwoven with layers of data from the 1572 supernova. However, the data from both the remnant and the light echo fracture Sophia Brahe’s likeness as a way to think about how her contribution to science has been degraded by time.

Time-slip Spectrum, 2026
Duration 19:22 minutes
Single channel video installation
"Time-slip Spectrum" weaves together video footage of historical sites in Denmark and Sweden where Tycho and Sophia Brahe lived, worked, and witnessed the supernova in 1572, with footage of the Subaru telescope on the mountain of Maunakea in Hawai'i where a light echo of SN1572 was discovered. The piece is composed in 6 chapters and each chapter transforms as the light spectrum data of the supernova recorded in the light echo emerges.
